Citing former CIA director James Woolsey, who spoke of the West slaying "a large dragon" after the Cold War, Sir Ken said: "We now face the worst of both worlds: dragons are back, but snakes persist."
The “dragons” are thought to refer to state-based threats from Russia and China, while the “snakes” are the dangers posed by Islamist terrorist groups such as Islamic State and al Qaeda.
Sir Ken wrote: “This is my call to arms after 25 years: government, business, academia, and the public must treat national security not as the specialist concern of a handful of agencies, but as a shared national endeavour.”…
“Al Qaeda had to be not just taken on, but taken down. A gargantuan multinational effort, powerfully spearheaded by the US, devised new capabilities to dismantle the core of the organisation in Pakistan’s federally administered tribal areas, into which it had been pushed by the Afghan campaign,” he wrote.
“It worked. Al Qaeda remains a threat today, but its capabilities are a fraction of 2001’s. That rolling back was not inevitable; it was forced.”
However, he cautioned against complacency…”

“the emir of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)”
“Snakes and dragons everywhere we turn
Friends turn to enemies, on a brand-new day
Saints to whores, girls turn over night
She tests like heaven but she from hell
Am fireproof, you need proof?
Look at the fire they spit on my name
Tryna burn me down tryna
Tryna bring me down yeah
Tryna bring me down
But they can never bring me down
You’re a dragon in my life, you dragging my life
Snakes are hissing, these niggahs are snakes
Dragons and snakеs, she only wants sex
You talking myths; but facts about you and me; will nеver change
A father is always dope to his kid
I go crazy; hope my kids don’t be like me
Up up we go; I consider myself the greatest trapper alive”
“Won’t you give, pictures of you?
We’ll go out, lounge by the pool. Yeah
After the sun, has baked us through
We’ll retreat, to the bedroom
I would-a left you babe
I would’ve left you babe
I would-a left you babe
If I only could”
“Won't you show me who you are?
I've seen your house and seen your car
I used to be so much more sorted than I am now
I'm not perfect but I'm still a star
I will not compete with you
Not the way you want me to
We could stand up and fight through the night and we'd both die trying
I'd been waiting for a haven
From this self consumer nation
Of material endeavour
I think I prefer old Labour
Disconnect the faithful few
Get the children in they're room”
